What is Foot Reflexology

Reflexology is a non-invasive focussed pressure therapy procedure that can be directed at the feet or hands, usually at the feet. It is a holistic healing therapy and is based on the principle that there are zones and reflexes in different parts of the foot that relate to each system, organ and gland of the body. When these reflexes are stimulated, the body’s own electrical energy opens up any blockages in the corresponding part of the body. The manipulation of these reflexes removes the blockages and stress around the various organs, glands and systems, thus promoting better circulation and allows the body to return to its natural ‘homeostatic’ or ‘normal state’. A person will usually feel the positive effects of reflexology immediately after the session.

The roots of reflexology can be found in ancient Egypt and China. Reflexology works well with other forms of therapies and as a supplement to ongoing medical treatments.

Foot Reflexology
When applying direct pressure on specific reflexes, it can interrupt “short circuits”, within the body that cause nerve pain such as fibromyalgia. There are other pressure points that can stimulate the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain killers.
Reflexology can create an equilibrium with hormones within the body.  When these specific reflexed are manipulated, we can open up these glands to secrete hormones that need to be secreted and also reducing hyperactive hormones. Examples in which this is particularly beneficial is with under or overactive thyroid issues, PMS, Menopause and fertility issues. This can also benefit individuals who suffer from emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression.
Certain pressure points in reflexology can increase circulation within the body, therefore improving oxygenation all over the body. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals whose lifestyle’s are sedentary, or people who are immobile from underlying conditions. Reflexology can also aid in controlling blood pressure and works as a great conjunctive therapy for individuals with heart disease and circulatory issues.
Our lymphatic system is responsible for our body’s defense and resistance to disease. A flawed lymphatic system can lead to many ailments such as cancers, viruses and infections. Certain Pressure points in reflexology can help enhance transport of vital nutrients throughout this defence system.
In short, out respiratory system is responsible for supplying oxygen to the blood while removing carbon dioxide. A less than perfect respiratory system, can lead to a build up of carbon dioxide within the body which can be potentially dangerous.  Reflexology can work with our vital respiratory organs such as our lungs to maintain an ideal balance. This can help individuals breathe easier by removing blockages and opening up the lungs. This benefits both healthy individuals and those who suffer from ailments such as COPD and asthma.
(Stomach, Liver, Gallbladder, Gut)

Certain pressure points in reflexology can enhance metabolism and help the digestive system work optimally. (eg. constipation, diarrhea). It can also aid in liver detoxification as well as promote healing in this digestive tract for various disease processes.

Our kidneys are responsible for internal filtration and purification. When these reflexed are manipulated in reflexology, it can open up and blockages and allows this organ to eliminate toxins and function at an ideal state.  Furthermore, people who suffer from kidney disease, or malfunctioning kidneys can use reflexology as a complimentary therapy to enhance results.
Reflexology can aid in relaxation, which naturally reduces muscle tension, stresses, anxiety and overall restlessness. Sometimes, when individuals feel emotionally suppressed reflexology can allow for the opening of communication.
